I just wanted to thank all 3 of my former professors for teaching me everything that I know. Living in Scotland for the last 7 years made me realize how ignorant the international arena is, especially the general public who all they see are pictures of destroyed buildings in Palestinian Territories and then lobby against Israel. I cannot watch the news in the UK without anger. I just really hope your efforts at IDC to provide the information these societies are missing, will reach far, because the jewish citizens in other countries are now being targeted where they now live. It was nice seeing you all again after so many years and thank you again for all the knowledge I walk in life with thanks to you!
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:20:17

I believe that we have 2 problems: in the past, the lack of information, where people did not have the access to knowledge.Today, with social media we have too many information available (true and lies), and most of the people are not capable of processing and filter the information.
ricki alon
01:23:16
Less liked and more safe is sometimes the only answer.

01:23:54
I have a question πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ
Noam Ostfeld
01:26:05
To DaphneIsrael had repeated time and time again it will not cooperate with international investigations. The question is, since Israel employ international law lawyers in the army precisely for the purpose of reviewing targets in order to avoid breach of international law - why not cooperate, defend and move into attack on the international law level? Wouldn't this time prove to be an opportunity, as Hamas so clearly articulated it was aiming on civilian population?
Eran Berkowitz
01:26:36
Why does Israel need to justify herself and legitimate her actions of protection while it's known that no other country will allow rockets to be shot at their towns and civilians?
ricki alon
01:26:37
Trump and the Republicans in the USA get it. It is Naeiv Liberals that are hopeless.
ricki alon
01:27:01
Not sure what will it take to wake up American Jews to reality
Elisabeth Boukhobza
01:28:07
Why this confusion of Hamas and the Palestinian cause
Narayan Kumar
01:28:13
but is Israel a signatory to the ICC?
Noam Ostfeld
01:28:15
Thank you, Daphne
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:28:19
Pleasure.
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:28:46
Israel is not a signatory to the Rome Statute of the ICC but Palestine is so that means that acts committed in Palestine fall under the jurisdiction of the court
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:30:01
Elizabeth, this is because this take a united front in international institutions, even though in practice they are enemies
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:30:16
*they (meaning PA and Hamas)
Narayan Kumar
01:30:49
And that is the reason why Israel has refused to cooperate with any ICC investigation. It seems justified or it could result in flood gates of investigation and cases based on a single precedent.
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:31:11
Eran, Israel must take this seriously and "justify" itself because the consequences are great, and israel has learned this the hard way. (Goldstone, Hague prosecutions, etc.)
Bradley Martin
01:33:07
Question: What is (or can) be done to counter the acceptability of antisemitism on social media that we have seen during the recent conflict?
Asher Fisler
01:33:17
Question to Assaf M.: In the last few years there was huge immigration from Moslem countries into Europe. Do you have a prediction how this will affect the local jewish citizens in Europe in regard to militant Islamist Ideologie, which has come in some part together with the refugees into Europe?
ricki alon
01:34:13
They will hate us no matter what, we might as well do what is right for us.
Marcia Sokolowski
01:34:31
Daphne, as an ethicist dealing with public health I am very interested in the principle of proportionality - I’d really appreciate hearing more about your thoughts on proportionality
Nicholas Pacheco
01:35:56
Hello, little late to the event but thank you to the panel for your insight. Apologies if my question falls out of the scope of the discussion, but looking at the broader Middle East, Israel is obviously growing its defense partnership with other states in the region (Increase in SIBAT exports, IDEX showcase in Abu Dhabi), has the latest attacks from Gaza shifted some of the thought that came out of the Abraham Accords, and how is Israel considering QME in this policy?
Eran Berkowitz
01:38:01
Thank you, Daphne!Do you think we as a country don't do enough in advocacy? Or what else can we do, our biggest problem is censorship which stops us from showing our side in real-time and once the opposite side publishes its videos and photos first it doesn't matter what we will publish later.
Joy Kamura
01:40:25
Greetings from Kenya! Very informative session. Thank you all for sharing. I would like to learn more about Counter-terrorism. Kindly assist me with an opportunity to study on scholarship. Thank you.
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:40:32
Proportionality in international law is about making the following assessment: is the collateral damage anticipated from the strike excessive in relation to the military advantage anticipated (meaning the value of the target). It sounds like a complex formula, but since you asked... Its' a subjective assessment that must be made by the military commander at the time of the attack, based on the information available to him/her. The choice of target/weapon/time and type of the attack must be made so as to minimize the collateral damage (giving warning as Prof. Ganor explained by sending sms, dropping leaflets etc). This is why, for example, the Al Jala tower was evacuated before it was targeted. I hope this helps...

01:42:26
hello ! question to Daphne : what can be the consequences of the investigations in Israel asked by the international commission ? for instance, if the investigators decide that israel does not respect human rights, what will be the consequences ? just an international fine ? What will be the sentences ?
Daphne Richemond-Barak
01:43:05
Israelis could be sitting in prison in The Hague...
Narayan Kumar
01:43:35
Israel needs to counter the one-sided narrative on FB and other social media sites, if it has to win over the "useful idiots."

"ItΒ΄s easy to analyze the facts "a posteriori"(after they happened)", said a former intellgence agent in antierview I saw once. He continued: when you analyze a posteriori, you have all the time, and information to decide, but in the heat of the battle(conflict, media, courts of law), you do what is necesssary, with the information you got, to handle the situation.
